FAQ

What are the physical requirements?  While no previous camping or wilderness experience is necessary, Quest participants should to be able to carry a 40+ pound pack up to a mile over uneven terrain. Quest base camp will be at or above 8000 feet, and participants need to be in adequate physical condition. If you live below 4000 feet, we encourage you to arrive in Santa Fe at least one day early to begin the process of adjusting to altitude.

Do I have to fast? While not an absolute requirement, experience has shown that the ancient spiritual practice of fasting alone in the wilderness has powerful spiritual, emotional, and physical benefits - and we recommend that unless you have some overriding medical condition, you should make it your intention. Many people have done this before you!

Is it safe to fast for 4 days? Generally, yes. In fact, recent research is showing there are many health benefits to an extended fast. However, people respond differently to fasting, and some can experience nausea, stomach upset, or weakness. You should consult with your health care provider before questing, and we'll work with you if you have individual health needs that preclude fasting.

What should I do to prepare for the Quest?  We recommend purchasing “The Trail to the Sacred Mountain” available from Lost Borders Press.  This handbook is a useful guide to preparing for your journey. Once you register, we'll provide you with a detailed list of equipment and other things you'll need.
